Sheng Chen is Professor in Intelligent Systems and Signal Processing at Southampton Wireless Group, School of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton. He is a Fellow of the United Kingdom Royal Academy of Engineering, a fellow of IEEE and a fellow of IET. He is an ISI most highly cited researcher in engineering (March 2004). In 2004, there were less than 200 ISI most highly cited researchers in engineering worldwide.
He received the BEng degree from East China Petroleum Institute, China, in January 1982, and the PhD degree from City University, London, in September 1986, both in control engineering. In 2005, he was awarded the higher doctoral degree, Doctor of Science (DSC), by the University of Southampton.
From October 1986 to August 1999, he held various research and academic posts with University of Shef?eld, University of Edinburgh and University of Portsmouth, all in UK. Since September, 1999, he has been with School of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton.
Professor Chen has made world leading original research contributions to the ?elds of intelligent learning systems and adaptive signal processing as well as in their applications to nonlinear system modelling, control and wireless communications. He is internationally renowned for his exceptionally large number of high-quality original publications in high-impact academic journals. Many of his research papers are in?uential and widely cited. Currently, he has over 12000 Web of Sciences citations and over 25800 Google Scholar citations.
His United Kingdom Royal Academy of Engineering Fellow citation reads: for outstanding and world leading research in intelligent learning systems and adaptive signal processing together with their widespread applications to robotics, medicine, space & defence and mobile communications. The intelligent learning algorithms he has developed are among the most highly cited and signi?cant publications in the engineering literature.

We have been dreaming of “extending terrestrial mobile network to sky”, more speci?cally, constructing aeronautical ad hoc network for realizing “Internet above the Cloud”. Existing physical-layer transmission techniques for aeronautical communications are incapable of supporting this high-throughput application. In this talk, we present our newly proposed massive MIMO assisted adaptive coding and modulation based physical-layer transmission scheme, which is capable of offering suf?ciently high throughput to support air-to-air transmission for realizing “Internet above the Cloud”. Many challenges remain, particularly, on how to construct reliable higher-layer protocols for enabling aeronautical ad hoc networking to realize the dream of “Internet above the Cloud”.
