主讲人:澳大利亚计算机学院副院长Dr Ramesh Sankaranarayana

讲座主题:“Understanding user search behaviour on mobile devices”

讲座简介:

Web search on hand-held devices has become enormously common and popular. Although a number of studies have revealed how users interact with search engine result pages (SERPs) on desktop machines, there are comparatively few studies related to user interaction in mobile web search. Search results are commonly shown in a similar way whether on a mobile phone or a desktop. Therefore, it is still difficult to know what happens between users and SERPs when searching on small screens, and this means that the current presentation of SERPs on mobile devices may not be optimal.

In this talk, four key issues will be considered: screen size for desktop monitors vs mobile devices; search behaviour on different sized small screens; horizontal viewport control in mobile web search; and the effect of snippet length on a mobile device.

The research has been conducted with a view to better understanding users mobile web search behaviour. The findings can be applied to a wide range of research areas such as information retrieval, human-computer integration, and even social science for better presentation of SERP on mobile devices.

主讲人简介:

Ramesh Sankaranarayana is currently the Associate Director (Educational Partnerships) of the Research School of Computer Science, College of Engineering and Computer Science at The Australian National University. He has previously held appointments as Associate Director (Education) in the Research School of Computer Science, and Associate Dean Undergraduate (Computer Science) in the former Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, ANU. He graduated with a PhD from the University of Alberta, Canada and a ME (Electrical Engineering) from the Indian Institute of Science, India. His research interests lie in the areas of information retrieval, software engineering and security.

讲座主题:Smart Grid Optimization Supported by Data Analytics, Energy Storage and Renewables

讲座简介:

Energy sector in most countries is undergoing a complex transition not only due to access to increasingly affordable solar technologies but also due to the increased ability to predict how electricity will be used by consumers, which then can be used to optimize the usage of non-dispatchable energy.  In Australia there are remote areas where grid electricity is not available and cost prohibitive. Therefore fully renewable off grid opportunities for houses will be a practical and sustainable solution for energy crisis and challenges facing in Australia and other countries.

We have completed some initial work including [1-5] with PhD students and industry partners.

主讲人简介:

Saman Halgamuge, Fellow of the IEEE, is a Professor and the Director/Head of Research School of Engineering, The Australian National University. He has previously held appointments as Professor and Associate Dean International at the University of Melbourne.  He graduated with Dipl.-Ing and PhD degrees in Data Engineering (“Datentechnik”) from Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany and B.Sc. Engineering from University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. He is an Associate Editor of BMC Bioinformatics, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II and Applied Mathematics (Hindawi). His research that lead to 25o publications has been funded over the last 20 years by Australian Research Council (16 grants), National Health and Medical Research Council (2 grants), industry and other external organisations (13 grants or contracts) and funding to support stipends for 45 PhD students.  His research record is in Data engineering, which includes Data Analytics and Optimization focusing on applications in Mechatronics, Energy, Biology and Medicine.
